| New VLT training on the way for Sask. VLT operators |
|
(Jul. 17/07) Operators of Saskatchewan restaurants and bars with video lottery terminals (VLTs) on-site will be required to complete a new responsible gaming training course. While the revised program is currently in development, it is expected that at least one person per establishment will be required to take the VLT training. The mandatory program is expected to be introduced in early 2008.
Mandatory VLT training was first introduced in 1999, but the government only recently announced its intention to revise the training program. Changes to the existing VLT training program were recommended as part of a Dec. 2006 study that examined the relationship between problem gambling and electronic gaming machines (including VLTs).
In response to the study, the government opted to maintain the number of VLTs in the province, but signalled its intention to revitalize mandatory training for VLT site contractors. The government will also review the placement standards for automatic teller machines (ATMs) in locations with VLTs.
CRFA will continue to work with the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA), the organization responsible for revising the VLT training program, to ensure program costs are kept to a minimum and timeframes for implementation are reasonable and workable for Saskatchewan restaurants and bars.
