(Oct. 16/08) One of the biggest surprises of the federal election was the outcome in the riding of Edmonton-Strathcona. Respected Restaurant Caucus Member of Parliament, Rahim Jaffer, lost his seat by only 441 votes. Rahim has been an outstanding contributor to the Restaurant Caucus and will be missed.
CRFA also must bid farewell to two other Restaurant Caucus members. Both Roy Cullen, formerly representing the riding of Etobicoke North and the unofficial leader of the Restaurant Caucus since it was established in 1998, and Alexa McDonough, formerly representing the riding of Halifax Centre, chose not to run for re-election. CRFA wishes them well in retirement and thanks them for their contributions to the foodservice industry.
The remaining 10 members of the Restaurant Caucus, which is currently made up of Liberal and Conservative Members of Parliament, won in their ridings. In addition, former Restaurant Caucus member John Duncan from the riding of Vancouver Island North regained the seat he lost in 2006.
CRFA meets on a regular basis with Restaurant Caucus MPs to brief them on the foodservice industry and seek their support on key legislative issues ranging from labour shortage to food supply. Restaurant Caucus members in the last Parliament were:

In the coming weeks CRFA will be meeting many of Ottawa's new MPs to make them aware of industry issues and to identify potential new members of the Restaurant Caucus. During the election campaign, every candidate received an information package from CRFA that provided an overview of the industry's contribution to the local economy and outlined five key industry issues: labour shortage, nutrition and fitness, food supply, GST harmonization, and credit cards. CRFA directors, members and staff also met with candidates across the country to personally deliver the industry's messages.
