| $4.00-meals beat HST in Ontario |
|
(Nov. 17/09) In Ontario, meals under $4.00 will be HST-exempt when the new 13% harmonized sales tax comes into effect July 2010. Under Ontario Tax Plan for More Jobs and Growth Act, 2009 – the Act that will bring the HST to the province – meals under $4.00 will continue to be subject only to the 5% federal GST.
Loss of this exemption would have harmed a significant segment of the industry. CRFA is pleased the government has agreed to protect these members from a new sales tax, and continues to pursue tax changes beneficial to licensees in Ontario, speaking with both the Ministries of Revenue and Finance.
Other items exempt from the HST include newspaper subscriptions, books, diapers, feminine hygiene products, and children’s clothing and booster seats. The government has completed its work on any additional exemptions.
