Ontario offers wage subsidy for summer students

(May 6/09) Employers in Ontario now have access to a $2/hour hiring incentive when they employ youth aged 15 to 30 through the province’s Summer Jobs Service.  This wage subsidy will assist both private and not-for-profit businesses in hiring more summer students.

CRFA welcomes this announcement, especially given the current economic challenges facing Ontario’s foodservice industry.  Hard-hit by job losses and the tourism slump, and with rising labour costs and tax harmonization on the horizon, Ontario is expected to experience the largest decline in foodservice sales this year, compared to all other provinces.  With profit margins narrowing to 2.5% of operative revenue, operators need opportunities to help offset the rising cost of doing business.
