Reminder: PEI’s new statutory holiday

(Jan. 19/09) Prince Edward Island will observe its new statutory holiday – Islander Day – on February 9.

Introduced in the May 2008 throne speech and passed by the legislature in November, the new statutory holiday was the result of a 2006 employment standards review.  The review noted that PEI had the lowers number of statutory holidays and recommended the introduction of holidays associated with Thanksgiving and Victoria Day.

CRFA and other members of the business community succesfully lobbied for the introduction of a single new statutory holiday in February.  A February date is preferable because it minimizes the impact for foodservice, which is typically more busy during spring, summer and fall months.
