Speak out: Nova Scotia minimum wage review

(Feb. 10/09) The government of Nova Scotia is seeking input on its proposed increases to the province’s minimum wage, providing an excellent opportunity for restaurant operators to speak out about the importance of a tip differential.

Nova Scotia’s Minimum Wage Review Committee – which is composed of employee and employer stakeholders – has recommended that the government move forward with its scheduled increases to the minimum wage (see table below), but was unable to reach consensus on the issue of differential minimum wages for employees who earn tips.  The committee was asked to review this new minimum wage option as a result of CRFA’s lobbying efforts.

Proposed minimum wage increases:

Apr. 1, 2009 $8.60
Apr. 1, 2010 $9.20
Oct. 1, 2010 $9.65

The Minister of Labour and Workforce Development is now reviewing the Review Committee’s recommendations.  We encourage members to contact government to underscore the importance of incremental wage increases phased in over time, and to remind government of the value of a tip differential, which would recognize the greater earning potential of employees who earn gratuities.

Members are also encouraged to join CRFA in our request that the government reconsider the proposed increases in light of current economic conditions.
