| Alberta freezes minimum wage for 2010 |

(Feb. 16/10) CRFA welcomes Alberta’s decision to freeze minimum wage for 2010 and review its minimum wage policy this year. The Feb. 3 announcement by Alberta’s Minister of Employment and Immigration, Thomas Lukaszuk, reflects what CRFA has been advocating for the past couple of years.
In the upcoming minimum wage policy review consultations, CRFA will once again argue against the existing policy of linking minimum wage to the previous year’s annual wage inflation because it does not reflect current market conditions. This policy also fails to provide operators with enough notice to revise labour budgets and implement the minimum wage adjustment.
CRFA continues to recommend the Alberta government introduce gratuity and training wage differentials the next time the province’s minimum wage increases – similar to what other provinces have done.
