Nova Scotia’s minimum wage to rise April 1
(Jan. 30/12) Nova Scotia’s minimum wage will increase on April 1, 2012, as follows:
- regular minimum wage jumps from $10 to $10.15/hour; and
- minimum wage for inexperienced workers rises from $9.50 to $9.65/hour.
After three years of multiple increases far in excess of other economic indicators, restaurateurs can take some comfort that this will be the only raise in the next 12 months.
The 1.5 per cent hike in the regular minimum wage is based on the Low-Income Cut Off for 2012. However, this increase makes Nova Scotia’s minimum wage the highest in the region.
CRFA action
CRFA has met Labour Minister More and senior officials, and requested the following:
- freeze minimum wage for 2012, or at minimum, keep increases in line with other economic indicators;
- introduce a tip differential for servers in licensed establishments; and
- maintain the training wage differential.
