(Jun. 15, 2009) CRFA has just published Provincial InfoStats, a 10-year comparison of foodservice industry performance by province, and it reveals some interesting trends. Here’s a small taste:
The Highs…
Province with the highest average unit volume in 2008: Alberta
Although the average unit volume in Alberta moderated to 0.6% growth in 2008 following several years of strong gains, the province leads the country in average unit volume at $778,400 per year. This is nearly $192,000 more than the Canadian average.
Province with the biggest gain in average unit volume in 2008: Saskatchewan
With double-digit gains in most segments, Saskatchewan led the country with a 13.7% jump in the average unit volume (total industry sales divided by total number of units) in 2008. Averaging $633,500 a year, unit volumes in Saskatchewan are $47,500 higher than the national average. They were $17,200 below the national average just one year earlier.
Province with the highest number of foodservice locations (restaurants, bars, caterers) per capita: British Columbia
The number of commercial foodservice units in British Columbia has declined for four consecutive years, but the province continues to boast the highest number of units per capita. British Columbia has 27.3 foodservice locations per 10,000 inhabitants, compared to the national average of 25.2.
The Lows…
Province with the lowest average unit volume in 2008: Newfoundland and Labrador
Due to a high unemployment rate and below-average disposable income, Newfoundland and Labrador ranks last in Canada with an average unit volume of $479,500 per year, compared to the national average of $586,000.
Province with the most dramatic loss in average unit volume: Ontario
In 2008, the average unit volume in Ontario rose just 0.9% to $560,200 a year due to weak consumer demand and fewer tourists. Ontario’s average unit volume is now $25,800 below the national average – a sharp contrast to 2003, when it was $20,300 above the national average.
Province with the lowest number of foodservice locations (restaurants, bars, caterers) per capita: Manitoba
The number of commercial foodservice establishments in Manitoba fell 3.2% in 2008 to 2,196. This translates to 18.2 units per 10,000 people, which is the lowest in Canada and well below the national average of 25.1.
